The Colombian mining sector is the new attractive destination in the world for mining, said Fred McMahon, co-author of a survey published annually by the Fraser Institute in Canada.

The survey is based on the opinions of nearly 500 executives from mining companies to measure the attractiveness of policies implemented to the sector by the governments around the world. According to McMahon, Colombia emerged as a promising mining point, almost a decade after the government launched an offensive to end a long guerrilla conflict.

"Colombia still ranks low in this survey and is unlikely to reach the top, but the miners are beginning to understand that there is much potential there, " said the expert, according to Reuters.

According to the measurement with the current mining policy and resource potential, the mining districts of Colombia are among the 17 most attractive regions of the world, surpassing Brazil, Peru and Mexico, among others, although below of Chile, who are fourth.

By taking into account the potential mining and groundwater use restrictions for mining, the country ranked 17, with about 65 percent favorable opinion (the levels are approximate because the scale is disclosed in intervals).
